OFFICER McKIRK
Music & lyrics by Peter Moffett (Peter Davison)

1986 DixieTrek: Peter Davison singing "Officer McKirk"

In the first year of his service
Young Officer McKirk
Proved the police chiefs wrong again
When he tided up New York.

He brought in ninety-nine murderers
And sixty-five robbers, ten rapists.
You’ll agree, that that ain’t bad
For a raw recruit
Wwho was stuck on desk duty.

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

Well, you may recall the other year
The riots they had down town.
Well, I won’t bother you with any facts;
I’ll just tell you McKirk was around.
And that up to that time in his years on the force
He had shot down ninety men,
But there with some luck and a loaded gun,
He made it a hundred and ten.

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

In the friendly copper wars of forty-nine
McKirk came top of the list,
When just by chance some fellow asked him
If he had ever had to use his fists.
Well, he sat for a while, and he thought for a bit,
Then smiled and said, “Just one.
And that was when giving a tourist a direction,
I used every bullet in my gun.”

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

In ’fifty-one McKirk he won
A medal for bravery.
In the face of a dangerous unarmed man,
McKirk stood for the free.
He said, “Make one move and I’ll fire my gun”,
And he meant just what he said.
‘Cause the guy had to breathe,
And sure enough when he did,
McKirk shot him dead.

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

Well, it just so happened
McKirk had a friend,
The murdering gangster sort.
And as you can imagine he wasn’t too pleased,
When this fellow was taken to court.
And he strolled into the jury room;
No one knows what he did in there.
But the way it worked out
Was the fellow went free,
And the judge was given the chair.

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

And there’s this tale that I heard tell
When Office McKirk
Saw a pool of blood on the ground below,
And in the middle there lay some jerk,
Crying “ ‘fore I die I need to phone my wife.
Do you think you could lend me a dime?”
Well, McKirk said, “I would,
But you owe me ten bucks
For a fouling up the sidewalk fine.”

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

Now I wouldn’t’ve said in my wildest dreams
That McKirk was a violent man.
Everybody that he didn’t like
He ended up shooting down.
And whenever McKirk was called to a crime,
You could bet your very last buck,
That they wouldn’t bother with the prisoners van.
Send straight for the mortuary truck.

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

Now the time has come for me to relate
How poor McKirk he met his fate
While wounded by some evil guy,
And everybody thought that he would die.
But he got better and he danced and he sang,
And he caused the same old fuss,
And he strolled out of those hospital gates,
Got run down by a bus.

Oh, Officer McKirk, you are the greatest man alive.
I do declare. I do declare.
And I do believe I’ll learn to love you yet.

Well, you might have thought that would be the end
Of McKirk’s notorious reign.
But you’d’ve been wrong ‘cause he went down below,
And started all over again.
He brought in ninety-nine werewolves and sixty-five witches
And a horny lookin’ fellow painted red.
And seeing as they don’t have guns down there,
He carries a fork instead.

Young Peter Moffett wrote "Officer McKirk" (before he regenerated into his acting career as Peter Davison). It became his first recorded song, recorded by the Dave Clark Five on the 1972 album "Dave Clark & Friends". Fourteen years later in 1986, Peter revisited the song at the Dixie Trek convention in a far more entertaining presentation. (link above) Lyrics transcribed by Mary Ellen Daugherty.
